Avian Avatars

04/12/2009 10:47 AM

I've noticed that the eagle is a popular avatar here, and I thought some of you might enjoy the streaming video of nesting eagles.

When they are moving around, you get some interesting views of nest architecture: these are massive and made with quite large sticks, but lined with soft straw.

I found a nest on the ground, under some straw the other day. It was completely made of grass and straw, an enclosed oval about 8X10 " with a small pook at one end apparently the entrance. No idea what bird makes these, but it must be quite small.

Seeing a bald eagle in the wild is inspiring.........even though they are scavengers.

Nice to see they are making a comeback

Last week, there was a road kill near my brothers farm. About 30 feet off the road with some crows around it. As I drove past the crows took off. then there were 2 birds left. All they did was spread thier wings and one glided away. Wing spread about 6 feet. ? I was surprise what the hell. Then I saw the white tipped tail feathers, and it bank soon after taking flight and I watched and saw the bald head.

One bad thing, I have to keep small dogs in the house.

There are a few eagles in our area, but I've never seen one close. They seem to avoid humans, nest far in the wilds. I've seen them flying high - the white head and huge wingspan sets them apart.

That's too bad about the dogs, though.

Here's something reallly harmless: this little jerboa is cuter than the easter bunny.

Back in the 50's and 60's DDT was used extensively, which when it got into the food chain such as run off and the eagles injeested it, it made the shells on thier eggs too thin.

As far as dogs, This things runs wild and loves it outside, it would only be a morsel though.

it'll be close but, I think my dog can take your bunny,

Thanks for this post ...

My only personal exposure to Bald Eagles was a few years ago when in Alaska. Fantastic, even if only from afar.

_____________Kind regards

The Bald Eagle has started to make a come back on the Chesapeake Bay. There are about 400 recorded nests at last count 360 some were active. There has been much done to help their return. Even to restricting the area around nesting sites. Some have found some unusual sites to nest like the ladders on the stacks of the power plants.

I have found them setting in trees over my head while fishing. With less than 20 feet of distance with out them taking flight. Beautiful birds.
