You can always upgrade your system. In fact in the US they no longer allow you to install a unit with a 10 rating so you have to upgrade on replacement.

What is the EER rating of the rest of the system (duct work, etc.)? This would drop your EER of your unit, but you will still realize and overall savings in energy consumption.

Thanks a lot Gray but I have an addittional concern, if I have to get rid of an old rating 10 compressor and install for example a 21 rating, is there anything else I should consider for the upgrade, for example is there an additional comcern regarding electrical considerations??, any literature I can dowload reagrding upgrades for this systems..

Thank you

The main thing that makes the newer AC units more efficient is surface area and refrigerant metering. They still use the same compressor, usually a scroll type. Both the condensing unit and the evaporator coils have a lot more tubing and fins. For the condensing unit, the larger surface area allows for lower compressor discharge pressures, which means less load on the compressor, therefore less power consumption. As for the evaporator, they also have more surface area and now use a thermal expansion valve in place of the old fixed metering device. This allows for more efficient heat pick up. For you to get the highest efficiency you need to install matched components, inside and out. The base standard where I am is now going too 14 SEER/ EER. There are units available with variable speed drive compressor that are said to be at the 21 range.
