Dear Friends,

Our vendor supplied Automatic Fire Suppression System on the HFC227es based(NFPA 2001) . As per there hydraulic calculation ,they suplied most of the materials with gas(HFC227ea). But when they installed there equipments I have noticed there are no orifice on the nozzle , asked them the said they are localy drilled and make orifice diameter . is it ok for us , as per my knowledge , manufacture prepare there hydraulic calulation and drilled and made orifice diameter. If they localy make , which part is importad to rectify.

Extingusher Gas: HFC227ea

Design Concentration( A,B,C,D & E type fire): 7.2%

Working Pressure: 25bar

Number of Zone: 3 (Three)

FCP: COnventional (Cross Zone type)

We have had some fire suppression systems installed on our grinders, and we have never had to drill any type of hole.

No it is not ok for them to do that. I am a fire protection engineer who has been designing these types of systems for 30 years. I have worked with virtually every manufacturer of this type of equipment, which is highly regulated due to the liability imposed by misuse. They are allowed to hydraulically calculate the system for pipe and nozzle orifice sizing using the manufacturer specific software. That software will be licensed to them only if they prove to be competent. The nozzle orifices are selected by the software, and custom drilled to order BY THE MANUFACTURER. The nozzles are UL Listed and Factory Mutual approved, The installer cannot drill them. If they have done that, your system carries no warranty, no listing, does not meet any code, and will not be backed by the manufacturer if it fails to put out a fire.

Dear WJMFIRE,

I have collected NFPA 2001 and NFPA 70 book, please give any any more information which is match your openion that books article or page no. I am agree with you, they have NFPA certified engineer , he said it is does not matter in locally drilled or manufacture drilled , main thing is it implementation according to the NFPA guideline(they emphasis there are openion ).

I am not expert in this fields, that why I haven't sifficient information.

NFPA 2001 clearly states that discharge nozzles must be "Listed". This means the organization who drills the orifice must be a UL Listed or Factory Mutual (or some other listing laboratory) approved manufacturer. Ask them to produce this documentation. Also, NFPA states that "discharge nozzles shall be permanently marked to identify the manufacturer as well as the type and size of the orifice". These nozzles do not appear to meet this section of the Code.

Also, for the record, I am a longtime member of NFPA. I assure you that NFPA will not certify anyone. The only organization who will certify an individual as to their knowledge in this field is NICET.
