Probably a bit of Power, one's Own Little Realm. or Moneymaking Opportunities for the Various Boards.

My Pet Peeve is even simpler!

Why can't we in the Worldwide Engineering Community use the same size papers for drawings, forms, and transmittals.

I often get a set of documents emailed from Europe for review and no available size paper here in USA fits.

Best I could find, is that it is called, Foolscape Folio, ask for that in an Office Supply store.

Longer than our letter size and shorter than our legal size.

Don't care if it is Metric or English.

And our networl printers usually can't handle it, even after switching Page Setup to Legal.

Almost always have to use a Desktop.

I very much doubt if it will be foolscap paper size, that was used in Britain up until the mid 60's (maybe later) but was ditched for the universally known metric 'A' sizes which do make sense.

A0 = 1 metre^2

A1 = ½ metre^2

A2 = 1/4 Metre^2 etc... etc...

With paper weights described in grammes per metre^2 or gsm, then its easy to see how much a sheet of paper will weigh...

I don't know how the USA 'legal' size of paper is determined?

John.

Kind of funny how we got of on a tangent here, but Paper sizes as Follows:

American Letter: 8 1/2" X 11"

American Legal: 8 1/2" X 14"

No Idea how these sizes became Arbitrary.

The Metric Paper in Question: Approximately: 8 3/8" X 12 1/2" as measured in Excel work Book delivered by email.

What would my colleagues relate that Metric Size to, in regard to European Sizing?

The AGMA is a USA standared used for the military and in general use. DIN is the European (ISO) standard controlling design there. The way the standards are used is different as the types of fits, backlash tolerances, and allowances are different between the two standards. The US standared was first out I believe (but cannot prove) and DIN followed. For the most part the DIN standard is in more common use in the US today as the AGMA standard is a bit dated. The AGMA standard is not being referenced on new prints and hasen't been updated since the 1960's. Good luck

what i think,

that all the countries were using their own standards, then Americans and Europians start emphasising for single unit at the same time, Europian combines and make one standard as unit, and Americans make their own way,

Now both are saying poor countries to follow their standards, and we are facing problems, as they are well devloped.
