"At the core of world-class maintenance performance is something called autonomous maintenance. In this context, the term autonomous doesn't mean performing maintenance in a vacuum or solely by the traditional maintenance department. Rather, it means that operators perform certain equipment maintenance activities and that maintenance crafts get closely involved in the daily operation of equipment."
Autonomous maintenance is all about giving the tasks of cleaning, inspection and lubrication of plant and machinery to the people who man them daily, namely the production operators. Of course, the plant engineering staff have to provide the requisite foundation training to the operators. Typically, in World Class Manufacturing, Autonomous Maintenance (AM) has 7 steps, whereby the knowledge base and expertise of the operators are challenged at each step.
