Water Injected Screw Compressors - Pros and Cons

04/16/2009 9:41 PM

I would like to know what are the disadvantages of a water injected screw compressor. I have been told that there is a very low life of the screw airend (Element)

There is only one reason to inject anything into a screw compressor and that is for cooling of the compressed gas and hence the hardware. Oil can be used and then separated out on the discharge side. Water can be used and can also be separated out but it is more costly. Water also aids corrosion so if it can be avoided do so. Not using any injection would probably result in using more stages with inter-cooling which is expensive.

I have had experience with water injected vacuum pumps, and the 2 problems I remember (before replacing them with a different type) was corrosion and cavitation.

However, I am not sure if they were true screw type.I do know they were not a piston pump.

The water was used as a "liquid ring" for sealing (and perhaps cooling).

There are many types of water injected and water lubricated compressors on the market. Many technical nonsense discussion too. Water is an very complicate medium to use it for lubrication and cooling in an water injected screw compressor. When you like to know more about this technology go here.
