Fire hose cabinet

04/19/2009 7:57 PM

Good morning guys,

We placed fire hose cabinet inside the cinemas. The architect have concerns with the clear breakable glass cover of those cabinets, which might reflect light coming off the screen of the cinema. Is there a rule from NFPA that the cover should be tansparent or an opaque glass will do just as long as there are proper signage on the face of the cover?

Am i right to say that they can use any glass finish as long as it is easy to break in case of an emergency?

sorry guys i'm no fire protection expert..thanks for the help in advance

Well, it probably is a good idea that the fire hose be in clear glass, though why any barrier between safety equipment should be there at all is of dubious utility.

I am not familiar with NFPA yet.

Did anyone ask the projectionist where to put the equipment? I expect that if there was a fire in the projection booth it would be the projectionist going to grab the extinguisher, or hose, and they might have a good idea about where it ought to be for all concerns.

Of course this sort of thing did not come up as a subject yesterday, for there have long been cinemas.

Likely a fireman would just say put a fire extinquisher on the wall, and forget about glass over it.

In the end I would defer to fire fighters, and the projectionist.

P.S. I once had a fire situation and was able to put it out on an airplane partly due to standard locations for such equipment.

NFPA is the USA fire protection code. It probably doesn't care about reflection from covers.

What country is this?

thought I said that. Said I hadn't yet looked up code. Said any fireman would likely ask why put a barrier between the safety equipment, and anyone who might need it.

No matter.

Yeah, similar question, what country?

I'd be actually surprised if by code firefighting equipment was required to be in a glass box.

Sadly, the reason it's behind glass is that vandals are every where.

Yes. Though I have often been in places where the fire safety equipment was naked on the wall even at the end of the hall.

thanks for your time guys, did find some answers with the local code (UAE)..it state that it should be in a cabinet with glass cover..Since the architect wont use clear glass..appropriate markings will be place in..
