Identification of Rubber Sheets

• keep the delivered material together with its deivery packaging and order number so that the material can be identified from its purchase order details.
• label the material upon arrival with the material details as stated on the purchase order.
• Identify storage areas and dedicate a single area to a single material. Maintain rigorously the segregation within areas.
• do physical tests. There will be a standardised hardness technique for determining the amount of 'bounce' in the rubber. Compare the tested sample to the manufacturer's standard.
• is there a colour difference that could readily identify the materials?
• is there a texture difference that could readily identify the materials?
• is there a smell difference that could readily identify the materials?

There is no simple method a layman can use to identify these materials.

Hardness, color, texture may help. What does your specification say? How did you buy them?

We bought with european standards. In particular for our last project french standards (NF L 17-120 and 121 for NBR, NF L 17-131 for clhroprene and NF T 47-402 for EPDM).

Hardness is not a help because we have sevaral types of hardness in all the types of rubbers.

Color is not a help because all are black.

Guest has replied correctly. a burn test of a small sliver of the material should tell which is which. Some times a float test will tell one material from the other also. Floating in different fluids ie, alcohol, water, oil may be necc. good luck.

Flame tests are only as good as the person performing the test and people with 20 years in the trade don't always guess right when burning the plastic. There may be distinguishing characteristics that an expert would recognize by burning the different materials, but not a layman.

Well, worse come to worse you might have to burn the one pcs each of the rubber sheet (which can be quite danger). Observe the smell, the smoke colour and even the fire itself.

There is no way to distinguish between different type of Rubber compound (Chloroprene, NBR, EPDM, Silicone, Nitrile, NR).

Burn test can also be concluded by a person having decades of experience in Rubber Industry.

The only way is lab testing.
