CONVERTING REFRIGERATOR TO A.C

04/25/2009 5:14 AM

MY REFREGERATOR IS ABOUT TO DISCARD AS HIGHER CAPACITY REQUIREMENT. MOTOR, COMPRESSOR , EVAPORATOR AND CIRCUIT ARE IN GOOD CONDITION. I AM THINKING TO USE THESE AC EQUIPMENTS AND CIRCUIT TO BUILD A SMALL AIRCONDITIONED CABIN ENVELOPING A DOUBLE COT. A METALLIC THIN SHEET CLOSED ENVELOP WHICH IS INSULATED WITH THERMOCOL. I WANT TO KNOW THE SUCCESS OF MY PROJECT AND VALUABLE SUGGESTIONS ARE WELECOMED.

Sounds feasible, but please don't shout!
(CAPITALS are considered equivalent to shouting and awkward to read)

If the cot is for use by unattended infants/invalids/animals etc., be careful to ensure that your maximum cooling capability (e.g. if the thermostat malfunctioned) could not endanger life.

This will of course work to a point. The components of the refrigerator are designed for the size of the cabinet and not much more. If it's a large(ish) room you aren't going to make a great difference in the temperature. The system will try to keep up with the desired temperature until the components start to burn out.

Where do you live? Is it normally very hot? Desert like? If so you are only going to get a couple of degrees in a small room.

Be sure to insulate the room well to retain the temperature for as long as possible, but don't make the mistake of sealing it too well due to the limited amount of breathable air that will be inside of such a small place. When building and "situating" the enclosure you should use dark colors. When it's completed keep it in a dark area, if possible in a cellar or below ground where it's naturally cooler already.

All in all it sounds like it should be a good experiment. Please let us know how it works out for you.

GOOD LUCK!
