Material Suitable for Ring Gauges

11/20/2006 11:26 PM

Can somebody advise me what would be a suitable material for ring gauges (for outer diameter measurements) used for shop floor purposes? Also, I need to know the hardness specification for these gauges.

Hi shesh,

Usually ring gauges for shop floor purposes are made from tool steel with a hardness about 60HRC. A very good material is the DIN 105WCr6. I don't know with which code standard you are familiar, so I hope you find the table below useful.

Best regards

lgeo

Hi Lgeo ,

Thanks , it was very useful information , i will take this input and implment and see the results.

My another requirement is that if we need to improve the life of the Gague(i.e to minimise the bore wear should we need any additional tratement ?)

I would be glad if i can get any inputs to this also.

thank you

Shesh.

A great many ring gages are hard chrome plated to increase wear resistance. This process is available from many suppliers and is pretty standard. Carbide gages are available but are up to 10X more expensive depending on the type of gage.

Hi shesh,

There are not many things that you can do in order to increase the wear resistance of the gauge. Maybe the guys who heat treat your alloy steels can help you. The gauges and the wear allowance go together (it means you have to insert the wear into your go-not go calculations. If you want gauges with the best wear resistance you have to use carbide for gauge's material.

Best regards

I have done this for many self holding taper fits. I allways make the gauges out of the same material to be machined for the fit and create both at the specified operating temperature of the equipment. If this is not an elevated temp fit then machine both at the same temp. You will make the ring gauge and mating part as your standard and put both in the tool cabinet.

For complete info on gage design check H 28 and the AIAG standards.

best.

In my younger years working at a gage shop (Hanlo) as a machinist, a popular material for O.D. ring gage masters was O-6. After heat treat (~60+ Rc) we would grind the ID oversize, send it out for chrome adding a couple of tenths making it undersized, regrind and finally lap it to size. IIRc, this was the process for XX and XXX masters.
