Cutting Buttress Threads

04/29/2009 9:10 AM

If a machinst has a requirement to cut o.d. buttress threads with a 50° angle, .25 threads per inch; his part is 11 inches o.d. what size pins should he measure over to check?

WHAT TITLE? WHAT THE HECK AM I SUPPOSED TO CLICK ON???

The screen is full of a lot of stuff, many items can be called a title.

Is this the thread profile? If yes where is the 50° angle? If not give the profile you work after.

Greetings,

The 50° is where your illustration has 45° shown. The pitch (P) is .25 inches. The major diameter (overall o.d.) is 11.0 inches.

Is it the only difference between standard and your profile?

I believe so. Basically, the machinist said his math results said he should use .25 pins to measure over which are actually too small.

The print just says 11" 4TPI Buttress Thread.

sorry for error it should be "dimEnsions". The problem could have been solved either by a computation or by a CAD drawing.

As a remark the angle modification leads to a thinner thread which could modify axial force transfer between male an female threads.
