What machine are you using and what current do you have to your dispossal?

Hi,

you can use THE FOLLWOING PARAMETERS.

welding machine - ador, lincoln or any thing in good condition calibrated machine is more suitable

i think MS plate may be A36 or A516 or S275JR

ELECTORDE - E7016 or E 7018

Electorde dia - 2.5mm is preferred for root, 3.2mm is preferred for fil and cap.

current - for 2.5mm dia electrode - amps 45 - 75; volts 18 - 22; travel speed 2 to 3 inch

The plate must be moisture free..u can pre heat upto ambient temperature.

you have to maintain interpass temperature 200dec Celcius max. during welding 12mm thick plate.

to get good quality of weld, interpass wire brush cleaning is most important to avoid slag or any foreign body matters.....

if u r using kempi machine n SA516 GR 60 or 70 material use E7018 3.2 dia electrode current 90-110amps,,voltage 18-20 rest parameters u cn find on electrode box

I would suggest an E-6011 electrode, 3/32" size, and around 80- 90 amps. 3/32" arc length and with a light jacking motion in line of the weld. Run this rod with about a 5-10 degree angle sloped towards the travel for flat, horizontal and overhead welding. If you are not very experienced with welding. If you do on the other hand know how to weld then a 3/32" E-7018 will work well at 80-90 amps with a 3/32" arc length and a tight circular motion and same angle as other rod.

Hi,

For 12 mm thick plate E 7018 may not be necessary unless the base plate is having UTS value beyond 44-45 kg/mm2. E 6013 medium heavy coated x-ray quality electrode for radiographic quality job or non x-ray quality electrode ( if price of the consumables matters to you) for structural welding.

A 10 swg. electrode (or) 3.20 mm size will be OK for Root ,filler and cap passes. The current selection of 90-130 amps with a travel speed of 6-8" per minute (15-20 cms /minute) should be OK. No preheating is required as such and if required a 4.00 size electrode ( 140-170 amps) can be substituted for filler and cap passes for higher productivity.

In fact SMAW could be substituted (if you are interested) with GMAW process, using 1.20 mm size filler wire (replaces both 3.20 & 4,00 mm size in SMAW) with 90 amps /19-20 volts for root and 120-150 amps & 22 volts or so for filler cap passes. The stick out could be kept at 10-15 mm. This helps to augment productivity and lower your cost per kg metal build up compared to SMAW process. Here travel speed starts with 15-20 cms. for root and 25-30 cms. per minute for filler cap passes. Best of Luck. Sridhar.

Oh Pipewelder! Why don't you like this guy? You didn't even tell him about dressing in asbestos clothing before starting the job!

Seriously, don't you think that 6013 or 7014 would be better choices for this type of work?

Heh, just trying to give what is asked. To tell the truth I never have welded with a 7014 in my 30 years of burning rods and have not welded with a 6013 since welding school back in the 70's. I am sure either of these rods will work fine as long as the welder has enough experience to get started. The E6011 can handle rust, dirt and paint better than the other electrodes and welds allot like an E6010 which is a root bead rod used in pipe and other open butt welds.
