Think of a drilling rig as a manufacturing plant,It manufactures hole.A conventional rig consist of a mud pump and pits for circulating the mud thru the drill pit down to the bit and back up the outsideof the pipe and to the opposite end of the pits from the pump. The returning mud is cleand (sorta) by the shale shaker,ie a lot of the solids are removed.

The pipe (drill stem) is turned by a rotary table, the top 40 foot of the drill stem is called the "kelly",It is square, thereby fitting the "rotary table" which turns the entire string,When the kelly is drilled down, then it is raised "Slips" are set below the box (female end) of the drill pipe. The kelly is un-screwed from the drill stem and pushed over to the 'mouse hole where another 30-32 ft.of drilling pipe is waiting, this is made up to the kelly and raised up and screwed into the drill stem in the hole.

Slips removed, mud pump engaged and your back to makeing hole.

This is a very highly simplified example.there are numerous pieces of equipment I won't go into, too long of a post. "Blow-Out Preventers and accumulators,de-sanding equipment, gas busting equipment, electrical power plant,on-site geologist, and more and more.....

I have drilled probably over a hundred oil and gas wells,in Texas and Louisiana.

a) types depends on area of application and the depth (or HP of the drill) it may be mobile, desert, on shore, offshore etc

b) data about rigs will be available with any of the manufacturers.

c) The parts are too many in numbers and difficult to list out, from mast and substructure to draw works, to rotary, mud system .... and ends up with the protection mechanisms.

d) Function of parts look at the manuals.

e) Detail drawings - nobody in the world will give you, unless you tie up for manufacturing, or you are a manufacturere itself. I do not want to be out of job (and possibly behind bars) in these environs.

f) Are you aware of the complexicity of a rig ? it is not a small pneumatic or electric gun to drill a hole.

I tend to pass this type of question by unless it has a good potential for humor. Totally lost on those who ask them. Like the guy who "want more and more information about steam turbines, parts and instrumentation".

Google it, while your soaking your head.
