Vent & Overfill Combination Valve

05/02/2009 11:49 AM

Require dual purpose valve that can vent during filling and discharge of diesel but should close to prevent tank overfilling.

Supply line to tank is fitted with Asco I/S valve and controlled by level switches. Purpose of valve is to act as emergency valve to prevent tank overfilling.

Two functions need separating.

  • The overfill protection needs to be provided by some level-measuring device. In water tanks the humble Portsmouth Valve (a.k.a. "ballcock") is used, being a self-contained valve that shuts itself on high level. Some other float-operated valve could be selected. Does the tank have a level indicator on it too, by the way?
  • Venting the tank can then take place using some form of simple vent connection elsewhere on the tank. It would be wise to have the vent pointing downwars, so that rainwater cannot get in, and also it could have some method of keeping insects and other detritus out of it. Closing the vent while the tank is being filled is one of the easiest ways of bursting it.
