Excess Flow Valve for Spherical LPG Tank

05/08/2009 3:19 AM

Dear all..

I have two questions for you..

1. Is there any excess flow valve in the LPG spherical tank?

2. If there is any excess flow valve, where do we attach it?

Thanks engineers..

1. You should check with local codes/regulations. (Failing that you may be able to confirm with NFPA 58: Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code)

2. If required it should be installed as close to the vessel as possible. (If it installed 10 feet away, but the line breaks five feet from the tank - it doesn't really do any good)

I know that on the tanks used for fork lifts the valve is internal. I believe it is part of the output valve or in the port under it.

You bet. All containers size 2,000 gal water or larger require excess flow valves for protection of the container openings but there are these exceptions:

1. Filling connections (protection is buld in the filler valve.

2. Safety relief valve (obviously not)

3.Gaging devices require protection if the opening through which gas might be released is not larger than a No. 54 drill

In LPG piping systems connected to any storage facility (stationary or mobile), we recommend installing an excess flow valve, where its function is to stop uncontrolled release of LPG due to sudden cracking of that connecting piping. Sometimes, the isolating valves used in LPG systems can be supplied with built-in excess flow valve.

What I know from my previous experience is that excess flow check valves are installed at outlet of the equipment like tank outlet to avoid flow in case of rupture of line.......

Thanks Sir for all responses..

So far, i can draw the conclusion from you that excess flow valve is necessary in LPG storage.

One more question. in what nozzles should i install the excess flow valve? I have noticed here that excess flow valve is installed in LPG outlet valve.

For your info, my LPG spherical tank is consist of several nozzles: LPG Inlet, LPG outlet, bypass, drain, LPG vapour return, LPG vapour outlet, PSV, level indictor, venting, temperature indicator, termperature indicator, and manhle.

So? Simply LPG outlet valve or any other nozzles?

Thanks all for your answers..

Ok, Mr. Coffeebean.. Thanks for your answer.. Really helpful for me..

But i still have a question regarding your answer above, why do you install excess flow valve on the temperature indicator?
