Cable lugs specifications

05/09/2009 8:23 AM

Hi friends,

Recently we had presentation on Cable lugs by a leading manufacturer of Cable lugs in the Europe. This company is trying to make a entry in indian markets.

The presenter told that there are no Specifications (i.e., IS codes) which give a clear description of how to put a lug on to a cable core. He also told that even BS codes do not speak anything about Cable lugs.

Though myself is construction engineer (electrical) with 3 yrs experience, i could not verify his statement, because at site IS/BS codes are not available.

Can anybody among the intelligent elite throw some light on this??

Regards,

Prashanth

Re: Cable lugs specifications

I am not aware of any specific standard for correct termination and verification of suitable termination, of cable lugs to cable. What I have seen (and what is common in the various standards) is that the general connection and termination methods for electrically terminating wire and cable (also including cable lugs) are included as part of other electrical standards (such as general wiring standards, high voltage cable standards, etc). Statements such as using the correct tool for crimping the lug, suitable current handling capacity of the lug, dissimilar metals locking of the lug fastening method, support of the crimped connection, etc.

Is this for cable small lugs for consumer products, or cable lugs for power transmission and distribution (large cables and/or high voltage)?

Prashanth,

Jack of all Trades is correct as is your sales rep. There is no dictate in the IEC or NEC that describes how to apply a crimp connector.

The manufacture of the specific connector is required to supply you with directions that will cause his connector to conform to the specifications he provided. Because there are vast differences in the types, sizes, crimping tools, and materials, only the manufacture can determine how to best apply their product.

Hope this helps some,

Rick S.
