coalescent filter and hydrocarbons

05/11/2009 9:20 PM

Application: We are taking a sample of natural gas that comes out while drilling on the drilling rig. This sample is sent to a gas chromatograph and we are trying to detect and measure the first 5 hydrocarbons - Methane, Ethane, Propane, i-butane and n-butane.

Question: In order to remove the moisture, can I use a coalescent filter? Coalescent filter removes oil and water, but will it remove the lighter hydrocarbons as well. I am planning to use a coarse filter and a fine filter. What would be the recommended element size? Will 1 micron filter (for fine filter) remove the lighter hydrocarbons?

Hi

First you need to know to what level of dryness you need for your sample, is expressed in temperature Deg.(related to dew point PDP), I assume that the 3deg C would be ok than you can use a refrigerant dryer, the coalescent filter is for oil particle and big water particle and will not affect the chemical composition (is a mechanical filter made of a fine foam cartridge or paper cartridge with different kind of filtration level eg 0.01 or 0.001 micron all chemically inactive).

If you need very dry (-30 to -40 C) sample a Desiccant dryer or a membrane dryer will be your next option.

Hope this helps

Thanks, good to know it won't affect chemical composition of sample!
