Propane bulk tank

05/12/2009 3:24 AM

Is it necessary to put a gas evaporizer on my propane bulk tank. I have a 500 gallons tank and the lowest temp in my area is 19ºF. I have 10 stoves and a total of 350,000 btu/h consumption. Please advice..

Thanks

Propane boils at -42degC or so at atmospheric pressure. Please post more information as to why the vaporiser is being considered, as there is insufficient in the original posting.

Well, it is necessary to get some heat into the propane so that it will boil. A large surface area exposed to ambient temperatures will do it, though sizing is important. The energy to be absorbed is the latent heat of vaporisation of propane, plus the thermal capacity at constant pressure between the storage temperature and the ambient temperature, all times the flowrate.

Vaporisers are used on liquid nitrogen tanks, among other places, for the same reason, and the same considerations apply.
