I am using a software that requires assignment to a com port to recognize the hardware necessary to make it work. I have a RF reciever that is a USB, is it possible to build or is there something available that will enable me to us a USB to DB9 serial adapter cable so the computer will recognize the port and then convert from a DB9 back to a USB so I can plug the reciever into?

Thanks

Lantronix ( http://www.lantronix.com/) has in the past built devices that allowed for full RS-232C emulation over Ethernet. Which I have used to allow remote Ethernet equipped laptops to talk to serial port equipped PLC modules.

We also used it on PCs with no comm port, the Lantronix device came with a software driver that made the PC think there was a UART based comm port, then redirected everything sent to that particular comm port out to their device instead. Worked slick as could be... the software was oblivious to the difference.

Perhaps they have what you need...
