For cost, durability, longevity the equation keeps coming out traditional lead/acid.
I'm willing to be corrected, but to my mind that is the choice.
Within that technology one still has choices, I don't know if
submarine batteries are still available, but a good quality deep cycle
marine battery will go to zero with less damage, more often then
typical auto batteries off the shelf.
Depending where you are, golf cart batteries can be available,
larger and harder to handle, they are very rugged and also designed to
go to zero charge regularly.
