Heat treatment of cold formed dished ends

05/16/2009 9:00 AM

I am confused about heat treatment of cold formed dished Ends of pressure vessels,Heat exchanger

Some times we do stress relieving & some times we do normalising , Is there any criteria for this selection ?

Any body having some useful web links on Heat treatment let me know.

Yes, definitely there are key aspects about deciding what kind of heat treatment to carry on. You mentioned cold forming. Cold forming ends up with a product that has a strained structure, inherently with internal residual stress. Sometimes just does not matter. Sometimes its benefical Sometimes not, in your case, I bet you could have problems with residual stresses plus thermal induced tensions... Stress relief will not transform your structure, just allow these internal tensions to relieve (it is done below transformation temperatures). Normalizing is done by microstructure transformation, and is intended to obtain a more homogeneous structure, which is usually more refined because you did after the cold work and, thus, with reduced grain size. Good if you have subsequent work to do. Even better for toughness improvement and low temp leak-before-break characteristics. Ok, you asked for links. Instead of telling you details about what is stress relief and normalising, I will do better: go to an university or somewhere that has access to the worldwide known and save-my-neck-in-tight-situations publication called Metals Handbook. There are several different volumes. Look for heat treating of steel. A google search will also reveal you probably what you need to know. But, in these fundamentals of steel processing, I really believe that you will do better with a good book.

GA BHRESCOBAR.

Mitul:

DO you always use the same material to make theses ends?

My bet is that with some materials and level of work, stress relieving is adequate, with others, Normalising is called for.

While metals handbook will give you the background on differences between these two processes, The code will tell you why in certain situations, (material thickness, composition, amount of cold work) certain practices are required.

Hi Mitul, You got a good answer from bhrescobar. Low temperature stress relieving is more than sufficient for COLD FORMED dished ends. In case of hot forming only, you need to go for normalising. Please refer to VOLUME IV - Heat Treating Published by ASM International. Web site ref : www.asminternational.org. Rangasamy

May be the following paragraphs from ASME code, Section VIII, Division 1, are of interest:

• UCS-56 Requirements for Postweld Heat Treatment

• Table UCS-56 Postweld Heat Treatment Requirements for Carbon and Low Alloy Steels

• UG-79 Forming Shell Sections and Heads

• UCS-79 Forming Shell Sections and Heads (for acceptance criteria of extreme fiber elongation)
