In my own and limited oppinion, all are important, but: 1- You nay not know when, where and what you'll need, but, for me, luck is when the opportunity appears to the prepared one. So, education is fundamental - even though you do not know already how. 2- Surprisily or not, for around 90% of the problems I have faced and solved, commonsense was used. Of course, common sense here means good engineering practices, a clear examination of the situation and all the problem constraints, and taking in account cost and time. So, I'd say common sense comes from the first. 3- Experience is a great school, but costs a lot. It gives you the knowledge in the exact moment after you needed it. It helps you to connect some points sometimes - and it sometimes makes all the difference.

To quote AE "Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen".

First Education, then experience.

"Education" is obsolete knowledge presented to you by biased and bitter individuals that couldn't make it as productive members of their profession.

"Experience" is the knowledge you acquire 5 minutes after you needed it.

"Common sense" is what you get by watching others learn from "experience".

'Education' and 'common sens'e guide you.

When they fail to do so, you get 'experience',

so you can advise others where the first two went wrong.

guest we deserve you.

GA

As an Quality profesisional, I had read one paper.

There were some industrial experiment, if I remember, by Caltech for problem solving.

The control grops were asked to solve the problems by

a) Intuition

b) Systematic methods.

Average time taken to solve the problem and quality of the solution (that is the nearness to optimal) was significantly better for the (b)

It was difficult to visualise the time aspect, as the intuition is always the fastest. But then it may fail, so you go to the new intuition and so on. That had the time build up.

The (a) is of course nearest to the Experience + common sense

and (b) is to the education.
