220 VAC voltage reducer

05/19/2009 2:44 PM

I have a point-of-use electric water heater that is too hot for kitchen use. The single handle faucet will not allow enough cold water for proper temp. I think I need a means of reducing the voltage so that the water does not get too hot. Any ideas?

What's the maximum current draw of the water heater?

The common method of adjusting water heater temperature is to adjust the water heater's thermostat (the device that regulates the water temperature preventing the water heater vessel turning into a bomb and exploding). Does your water heater have a thermostat, either mechanical bi-metal or electronic (I would be surprised if it doesn't) that you can adjust or replace?

Is this a symptom of there not being enough flow through the water heater? If so, then what is affecting it -

  • a valve elsewhere partially closed?
  • "furring up" of the pipework?
  • "furring up" inside the water heater element chamber?
  • insufficient head on the incoming supply system?
  • etc.
