Speed and Angels

05/19/2009 3:22 PM

"From dogfights in the Nevada desert, to night landings on aircraft carriers in the Atlantic what begins as a story of realizing a childhood dream turns into a story of fighting for one's life." That's the description of Speed and Angels, a feature film about two young naval aviators as they realize their dreams in the cockpits of fighter jets.

A buddy of mine just sent me this link to a 10-minute episode (Part 4) on YouTube. Even if you just have time to watch the first couple of minutes, you'll find that the whoosh of jet engines provides a far better rush than a late-afternoon cup of coffee.

Hi Moose,

Certainly brings back quite a few memories of yesteryear.

Whilst serving Her Majesty's Pleasure in the Grey Funnel Line (Royal Australian Navy), most exercises involved aircraft..........I spent 3 years on an aircraft carrier and over 1,5 years of that on the flight deck..........most interesting.

The aircraft of course were rather different.............sea venoms, skyhawks, sea vixens, the Blackburn Beverly NA39 or Bucaneer...........this air craft actually penetrated the American Distant Early Warning System (the aircraft was the first one that could fly at sea level, in level flight and break the sound barrier, (I think that is right)..............evidently the Americans were none too pleased either.

Anyhow Moose, thanks for the memories.

Hi Kyoto,

I must admit that that is one terrible photograph............it was a much better looking aircraft than that photo gives the impression.

There was a training exercise in Nevada with the Americans (Red Flag)............they could not believe the low level ability of this aircraft and had none to match it.

This is a photograph of a bucaneer ait an aircraft museum in the UK

They were also capable of carrying an atomic payload.

Most pilots who flew these aircraft for the RAF and RN were very sorry to see them go at the end of their service.

My pleasure, MOBI! Thanks for sharing some memories of your own. I have added the Blackburn Beverly NA39 to my list of aircraft to research (and blog about).

Best,

Moose

Glad you liked it Moose It was one hell of an aircraft.

I can remember on one exercise in the South China Sea, one of these beasts came in at wave top height........its wing tips passed under our w/t masts (these were lowered as we had aircraft in the air)..........when it passed the bow, it virtually stood on its tail and went straight up.......... vertically......the power was absolutely awesome.

This photo shows the HMAS Melbourne (w/t masts on the port side are raised, when flying the masts are lowered....parallel to the sea)..............the Melbourne was only a small Light Fleet Carrier as seen in comparison to the USS Midway...........this was taken in 1981 I think.

...........one neat piece of equipment that I forgot to mention about the bucaneer was their air brakes...............very good for out manoeuvring other aircraft.......as well as for slowing down air speed for landing.

.....at least having this mechanism on the tail, it never distubed aifflow over aerofoil sufaces............and that was just another feature of this..........what I beliece was a truly magnificent aircraft.
