Electrical/Instrumentation Skills

05/21/2009 3:55 AM

I am interested to know of anyone who would possibly be able to provide information regarding the discipline of E/I related to an assessment or test. I have currently been engaged in a field outside of the discipline and was in need to refresh my skills and be up to par to take an upcoming skills test for the field. Practice tests, quizzes, etc are more than welcome along with a checklist sheet and/or study guide material. The test that I have to take is approximately 2 hrs long so any material provided to will certainly be helpful. Help with basic electrician and instrumentation subject matter is what the test will cover. If you may have material that you would like to email me please feel free to ask.

Thank you,

tiptoe

Hello tiptoe,

Your question is not getting much response because it is too general. The problem seems to be that there is no magical answer book for every problem. Each measurement, for which you would use some instrument, requires some knowledge and expectation of the item to be measured. Consequently, there are no instruments out there that simply does it all.

That is not to say that you couldn't use an oscilloscope to calculate an impedance. But you won't detect voltage distortion with a multimeter either. These are things you have to learn through years of education and practice. There are no short cuts. Specific problems require specific instruments for an effective analysis. A working knowledge has to be earned and it can not be faked. That is why there are tests.

certainly understood, but my efforts are not to fake knowledge but to help prepare myself more for test material. field experience is certainly just something that is acquired which ive had nearly 4.5 years experience doing however by being out of the loop for a minute i wanted to refresh myself with some "testing" material. as you may even know in your profession, field application can sometimes differ from an array of test material. simple practice test or relative new prep guides is more on the lines of what im seeking. if you may be of any help i would def appreciate it.

While I am not sure exactly about which areas you wish to focus, here are some links that I like and it is all free.

http://www.electronicsteacher.com/

http://www.newark.com/jsp/bespoke/bespoke9.jsp?bespokepage=newark/en_US/techcast/techcast.jsp&ICID=Online_Product_Training

Enjoy! I hope this covers it.
