Universe Sandbox

05/22/2009 1:22 AM

Whilst reading up on one of the Challenge Questions, I came across a cool program called "Universe Sandbox" ;

http://universesandbox.com/

It was suggested I post it up ( Ta, Roger !). Here's the brief summary I posted in the Challenge Question, though following the above link will tell you plenty.

***************

"For anyone who's interested, the link gives pretty good info on what it is; a sort of cosmology design tool/toy. It set's you up with an amazing animated universe, and then you can change parameters/create new objects. It all move before your eyes, with ability to zoom/pause/change view angle etc. The thing is set to allow you 60 minutes play, then the author just asks you to pay what you feel is a reasonable amount. I haven't used more than 10 minutes yet, but it's amazingly good. I'm pretty sure I'll give the author some money for it (just for the sceptics : I have absolutely no connection to the author) - it's one of the best simulators I've seen.

I'm not qualified to vouch for the accuracy of the program, but I doubt the guy/gal made many errors on fact with that much effort. It's both a fun program (destroying planets at whim !!), and a great learning tool.

Usual disclaimers apply."

*********************

The author is Dan Dixon. He asks for feedback when you use the programme, so I'll invite him to visit us here.

Enjoy having a play - I'd be interested to know what folks here think ; Does it appear accurate (I think so), have you created any noteworthy havoc with it (Oh, the poor Moon ), did your kids enjoy it just as much ( he ain't getting a look in yet !), have you managed to create a gravity flyby with it (not after 10 mins play) etc etc.

Glad you like it too, Roger.

I must have been in full Brit-mode when I typed 'programme', it sounds like a day at the races !

When I have time, I'd like to try create some flyby's (or failing that some ELE's )

The animation is brilliant, and it's a great piece of software that all ages can use to figure out more about the Universe. I sent the author a link to CR4 - hope he'll see it and visit us ; somebody who creates a program like that would surely enjoy CR4.

I'm the author of Universe Sandbox. Thanks for the positive write up Kris.

Regarding the accuracy: Universe Sandbox is representative of Newton's reality, with a focus on education and fun. It uses Newton's law of gravitation to calculate the acceleration on bodies and all the sizes, masses, and velocities are to scale. The data for the starting positions and velocities of the planets, moons, and asteroids come from NASA/JPL's Horizon System. (It doesn't take relativity into consideration.)

I'll recommend checking out the system/simulation "Dice & sports balls orbiting a Bowling Ball" (click on "Open" from the main menu). This shows how a baseball in orbit of a bowling ball at a distance of 1 meter takes about 6 days to make a full orbit.

Also check out the activity "Speed of Light" (click on "Fun Things to Do" from the main menu). This activity lets you watch light travel in real time from the Earth to the Moon. As a pulse of light emanates from the Sun it appears to travel in slow motion.

Regarding the future of the software: I'm currently working on a massive overhaul of the user interface which will make it much easier to use and will expose many non-obvious features (like how to move and rotate planets and galaxies which you can currently only do with the keyboard). This is still at least 1 month away from release.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'm happy to answer them.

Hello Dan - A very big welcome to CR4 !

Your program is absolutely fantastic, and I hope that my mentioning it here will enable more people to find it. I shall certainly have a look at the features you suggest.

CR4 has a lot of people interested in Astronomy, Planetary Physics and such like. It's not generally the kind of stuff I follow, but your program was so impressive I wanted to make sure people here were aware of it. If you have time to explore here I'm sure you'll find many discussions of interest. The nature of the place is very friendly, and it's well designed.

When I've played a little more, I'll post back here. I'm delighted that you picked up my message and registered with CR4.

Cheers,

Kris

Dan, nice job. Beautiful.

Kris, you dog, now I have to wait until home and download this again on a real machine, particularly since I shouldn't be wasting any office time playing with gravity... ;)

*I purchased that strange little "Spore" game for my daughter last Christmas, and she has had a lot of fun working with Intelligent Design for life forms. I'm looking forward to showing her this and spending a few hours of quality time ripping space dust away from the status quo.

Anybody crashed a Large asteroid into Jupitor yet? strange blob of atmosphere, that Jupitor...

"Kris, you dog, now I have to wait until home..."

ROFL! That's a perfect result - I love this place

I haven't got back to playing with the program yet, I'm waiting for some uninterrupted time so I can savour it. If it's any consolation, you've got me back by giving the link to Spore - yet another goody I won't be able to resist

It's great that more people have been able to find Dan's program, and fantastic that he's joined CR4 and offered to answer questions on Universe Sandbox. What I think is so cool, is that people at any level of knowledge can learn and have fun with it.
