Newtonian Fluids and Shear Stress

05/22/2009 4:50 AM

Could anyone pls suggest me some examples of newtonian & non newtonian fluids. this seems foolish question but which type of fluid is petroleum jelly

what parameters are required to calculate the shear stress for same

<...some examples of....non newtonian fluids...>

  • Tomato ketchup
  • Grease
  • Petroleum jelly
  • custard, or "crème Anglaise"
  • hair shampoo
  • shower gel

<...which type of fluid is petroleum jelly....>

It's a rheopectic pseudoplastic.

<...what parameters are required to calculate the shear stress for same...>

It depends upon the shear rate, as a graph of stress versus rate-of-shear gives a line that does not pass through the origin; petroleum jelly stays put once it is stationary.

All viscosities are highly dependent on temperature.

Mix up some cornfour and water into a thickish paste, if you stir s-l-o-w-l-y it flows.
If you try to stir it quickly it will crack!
Obviously you don't make gravy.

Thanx for great reply.

how can we calculate the pressure drop in line or line diameter for non newtonian fluids

what are the main factors which decide this or can u tell some numerical formula for same

is nobody able to tell something about same? actually we have to install lobe pump to transfer sauce from process vessel to heat exchanger.

sauce density 1.12 to 2.2g/cm3

viscosity 2000 to 4000 cP

specific heat 3.5 to 3.8 kj/kgdeg celcius

frnds, if u can help to tell how can i size the pipe & pump for same

<....calculate the pressure drop in line or line diameter for non newtonian fluids...>

  • The Weisbach-Darcy equation has general application to all fluids in all pipes of cylindrical cross-section.
  • There are simplified forms of it, and even look-up charts for simple, commonly-encountered fluids like steam and water.
  • If no calculation is available or applicable, how about a small-scale trial rig, then scale-up from it?
