If you need to have immediate detection of minute amounts of smoke due to sensitive materials these are good. Archives, film vaults, anything that requires immediate attention these are a must. They draw air into laser sensors that detect even the smallest amounts of smoke. However they do have thier quirks. They can be too sensitive for atomized particles and are prone to false alarms. If they are monitored with responders they are excellent.
In areas where stupid people microwave popcorn, apply hairspray or other silly things , my personal opinion is to avoid them. At times like these you'll think you have a fire or an extremely tempermental system.
