Licensed software packages need to be paid for. That way, when the licensee needs technical support, it is available free-of-charge. Further, upgrades and patches are available free-of-charge.

That is a partially true statement, the technical support on an annual basis is almost the same as the initial cost of the software.

The program is extremely expensive and the prospective client is not offered a trial copy or anything of that sort.

The program is best suited for huge projects, any other application is like hunting for a fly with an elephant gun. If you aren't driven to use the software by the customer requirement, I wouldn't use it. Opt for something a little more reasonable.
