Hi Rakesh

You can find a lot about elliptical gears at "Mechanisms and mechanical devices sourcebook" Nicholas P. Chironis, Neil Sclater , Noncircular gears.

Also you can look these links:

Where ever your need a varying angular speed in each cycle of rotation,

visit to site shown in my 1st post.

One good example I can remember is bicycle transmission. Shimano has made a series called biopace, that uses an elliptical gear that has a higher radius in the position aligned to the pedal lever, and a smaller radius in the oposite side, in the position the guy riding the bike is not in the more appropriated position to put force in it.

Simple, but curious in my oppinion.

Why must the center of rotation be at the 'origin' or center of the gear?

Is this an absolute necessity? If so the gear profiles will have to be generated for the needed variation in rotational velocity and/or acceleration.

Is this HOMEWORK or CLASSWORK for a machine design class? :-(

I actually do have a homework problem for a machine design class that basically asks the same question. Any insight on when the angular velocity of both elliptical gears are at unity? Thanks.

http://www.stirlingsouth.com/richard/develop/engines_under_development.htm tells how they did it using a very easy to follow explanation.
