The VCR Turns 30

06/08/2005 3:19 PM

It's official. According to the WCF Courier in Waterloo, Iowa, yesterday marked the 30th anniversary of the introduction of the VCR. Engadget thinks that the authors are referring to Sony's Betamax since JVC's rival VHS format wasn't released until 1976. Still, it's fun to celebrate a technology that is even older than the first episode (Episode IV, that is) of Star Wars.

Funny you mention Star Wars

That was the 2nd movie I saw on Betamax (my uncle made the choice over VHS in the mid-70s). The first - Mel Brooks' High Anxiety.

Man, I feel old....

Laser disk players

06/09/2005 8:27 AM

We never had a Beta or VCR player for a long time. We had a laser disc player; the disks were the size of an LP and came in this hard case that you slid into the machine. I think it was the forerunner to the CD or DVD. We had it back in @1983 so I guess it's not to old, technology wise.
