Replacement Relay for Metal Halide Lamp?

06/03/2009 10:21 PM

I am trying to rewire this lamp but the problem is relay ( which i think is acting as ignitor here) I guess because if I change it back to old relay, the whole things works and we dont have any information on old relay as the lamp is very old and most of old relay have started failing.

the components of the holder are:

1.High Voltage Pulse Transformer for CSI 1000 lamp

2.2X capacitors (230 nF, 1000V),[C2=C3]

3. 1X capacitor (4700PF, 3KV) , these I put new one, earlier 5000PF, 800V)

4. 1XResistor (4700ohm, 2W),[R1]

5. 1XResistor (5500000ohm, 23 W)

I have drawn a circuit diagram as well. The lamp holder type is G38 and globe used is SPL 1000, CSI 1000 PAR 64, Mogul Bi Post type.

any alternative for relay(ignitor can I can use with this circuit)???

I will really appreciate any help.

Why not just buy a new lamp. The cost will be cheaper that to replace the relay with the ignitor. Changing the ignitor with the relay is something new and the lamp may not works. Most of these halide lamp are come with complete ignitor, choke, capacitor to suite the lamp.

Anyway, here is the circuit for the halide lamp but see if you can make use of it.

Thanks Simon,

I have got 40 lamps to fix...i am mechanical engineer not electrical as well..can you suggest alternative components and circuit based on above circuit diagram.

help would be much appreciated.

These lamp now cost AU$ 1400 each.

It too expensive at AU$ 1400. Down here is only cost about RM 1000.00 or equal to AU$ 370 ++

It shouldn't be that expensive.

It has been my experience that if you are replacing "very old relays" in "very old fixtures" you could be setting up a maintenance nightmare since the rest of the fixture is still "very old" and is still subject to failure.

As a mechanical engineer you understand that if you replace one gear in a transmission, you will put additional strain on the other moving parts of the transmission. Since the new part has not been honed down and the tolerances of the new gear does not relate to the tolerances of the old gear. These physical laws relate to electrical as well as mechanical.

Its not unusual for one new part in an old system to cause total failure of the rest of the fixture. Also, the lamp in a MH fixture usually goes bad first not the rest of the components. It might be cheaper and less labor intensive to get a complete retro-fit kit and replace the entire guts of the system rather than one piece or replace the fixture entirely.

guyssss thanks........

I got a quote from THORN, for OS 1000 CSI lamp head, it is 1300$, and globe itself is $500(GE SPL 1000 PAR 64 fo rG38 holders). So its costly..

I changed each component(wiring, capacitors and resistors) except the transformer. The whole thing works with old relay but with new relay they dont? This is the issue...

Maybe the old and the new relay have different timing in energize and de energize. I don't have these old lamps down here but base on your circuit it would be the different time for charging and discharging to energize the lamp.

Maybe the timing for the new relay is faster than the old relay. Well at least you found some suppliers for these lamp.

If you can figure the operating voltage, max contact current and voltage of the relay, you should be able pick up a similar or higher rated one at your electrical supplier. And depending on what you are able to find locally, modify/rewire the new relay. This might call for modifying the mechanicals/housing too which should be fairly easy for you, being mechanically oriented.
