coal firedpower plant

06/08/2009 11:38 AM

As the oil resources of all the world are depleting, many counteries are clooking for coal firedpower plants.

the first step is to make a feasibility study of the project...so ....

How to make fasibility study report of coal fired power plant???

Start with information capture.

I will like to just correct a bit,

As the oil resources of all the world are depleting, many counteries are clooking for coal firedpower plants.

The problem is the good quality coal also is depleting.

And this is the problem we are facing day in and day out, The coal to be efficiently used in a power plant must have quite a few characteristics - (calorific value, %Volatile, Grindability- eg Hardgrove Index, % Ash content, % Silica, Quartz etc, %S, and quite a few others)

The coals that qualify to have a good feed for the boilers are not now as abundant as it was say some 20-30 years back. The reserves exist, undoubtedly, but depending on the demand, I am not sure who will be over first the coal or the oil.

The coal that will be left out, will not that efficient- since the grinding of and getting the energy out of it will be that efficient.

Of course we have the FBCs but again they are currently limited by size, and are suitable for some particular types of coals.

The point here is (though my industry is overly dependent on the coal) we can not depend on it the way we are. In India at least there is quite over dependence on it, as is in quite a few other countries.

Sooner or later, for the sake of the survival, we have to look at the other sources, that are at least now abandunt.

And that includes - Solar (currently economicaly infeasible, but then again even a decade back, there were talks of cells with about 30% or more conversion efficiency and let us hope that they could stabilise it soon out of lab, since their efficiency quickly dropped to the natural values of infeassibility - abot 15% or so)

Nuclear- unfortunately taboo and the safety wise- actual, as well as political is too risky.

Wind- may be in bits and pieces but can not cater to the over all requirement.

The choices are currently between first two only.

As far as your question- about feasibility study is concerned- every day there are plants coming up- coal fired- around the worls, contact any of them, or better hire a consultant to do it for you, despite all the above misgivings about coal and oil.

As far as the actual data is concerned - the countries are not looking for coal instead of oil (as you have mentioned)- they have been already accepted its supremacy may be a century ago, and the raw data world wide coal vs Oil can corroborate (as per wiki 50% of US is coal fired).

The Oil and gas has started to put a bite now with the gas Turbines, but then again a single generator of say 800MW or 1000MW will be of coal fired only.

In addition we have lots of reserves of really high quality coal, perfect for coal plants. We don't use it for coal plants because we sell it to Australia to power their steel smelters (which is an even better use of high quality low impurity coal).

My advise to you is to have a long, hard look on the internet for information. Additionally there are also existing studies and reports on coal plants and use available for download (but most will need to be purchased).

The feasiblity study of the project is the basis on which viablity and bankablity depends.

There are many engineering consultants do this job as lot of interdisciplinary activites are involved.

What is the size/requirement of power and at which location.
