Calorific Value of Municipal Solid Wate (MSW)

06/09/2009 11:19 AM

Dear Members,

I am working on a feasibility study for a Waste-to-energy incinerators plant in develop country.

I am looking for an Interner link or method for global calorific value of MSW calculations (plastic, paper & cardboard, wood, textile)

Thanks in advance, best regards

Ernesto

<...method for global calorific value of MSW...>

It depends on the composition of the MSW and how dry it is, which varies with time of day, and location.

1.1094783 x 107 BTU/ton, but that's only in round numbers.

Be sure to consider the plasma gasification method. This new form of waste incineration is well developed now. Here is a URL dated 2004 that describes a study done in Brazil:

http://www.scielo.br/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0103-97332004000800015

These systems have been slow to gain a foot hold. I am sure that is because of the very intense "lobby" that the waste industry employs to protect their long-haul tipping fees. Also, these systems are not cheap, but if you consider the savings from the generation of electrical power it pays off in about 10 years. One report I read stated that one third of the power generated from MSW could be fed back to keep the plasma arc going, and the other two thirds was for what ever you need (even fed back to the grid for credit).
