Boil Drum Instrumentation

06/10/2009 4:57 AM

Dear All,

I would like to know some more information about coal-based power plants range from 200MW to 600MW in North America, may anyone help advise:

1. What is the requirement for boiler drum level indicators: how many gauges glasses needed and how many DP indicators needed in such drum indicating. The compulsory requirement in China is 2 local display indicators gauge glass and 3 independent DP indicators, what about requirement in North America.

2. Is there any other codes and standards for coal-based power plants especially for the boilers besides ASME.

Thank you for your help and wish you all happiest every day.
Paul

Personal that operate Boilers, are required to complete couse training and sucessfully pass and recieve a Station Steam Plant Operating License (or similar name). License from First Class to Third Class is required depending on Position and Operating Authority. Each State applies additional requirements. The course text books provide all the information and requirements. In regards to your question, I believe it is the most important and inforced requirement. Most injuries and deaths in boiler operation resulted in loss of Drum Water Level, which in some cases indicated a normal level. I believe that the required instrument lines are required NOT to have isolation valves--preventing a sensed level different that actual.
