How to calculate lifetime of carbide punch?

Hello all ...

I made a die design for fine blanking an aluminum material dia. 25mm, thickness 1.6mm. I use a sintered carbide, ground finish, for punch and die. The clearance between punch and die is 0.02mm total.

How to calculate lifetime of punch and dies, so I can prepare for regrinding those tools?

Impossible to guess--too many unknowns hardness of material,hardness of punch, ductility of material being cut, lubrication, cleanliness, speed of press, temperature,etc.

Dear Friend,

The die life depend upon many aspects e.g. die design whether the die is compound die or blank through die, the tolerance on 25 mm dia accepted etc.; the press accuracy on which the die is being mounted, the accuracy of the die set on which the die is fixed. Usually if the hardness of the die and puch is good, if lubrication is used properly then carbide dies give per grind about 200,000 strokes.

Hi Amir Sofwan, For fine blanking process, the narrow cutting clearance is approx. 0.5 % of the material thickness. According to this formula, the clearance for 1.6 mm should be 0.008 mm. 0.02 mm clearance is for 4 mm sheet. To start with you may use M2 ( HSS ) material for punch & die instead of sintered carbide. Regulated cutting speed normally should not exceed 50 mm/ sec. Hope this helps you to improove tool life. Good luck ! Rangasamy
