Thermal insulation

06/14/2009 8:21 AM

Hi all,

currently we are using calcium silicate for insulating steam pipes. Please suggest me the efficient insulating material than calcium silicate so as to reduce insulation thickness

Steam temp: 350 deg

Check out this selection table.

You might want to look at polyurethane.....has an R Value of 7-8 and melts at 280C.....should work, is flexible, and twice or more the R value of calcium silicate, so can be thinner.

What is the service? Pipe or vessel? Is maintenance frequent causing damage to calcium silicate?

It is on pipe of 150NB

No frequent service is required

Material is used in marine application

For marine application, lightness is important. Use mineral wool

Dear,

C.S is good for steam pipes conveying steam and is the best material with thin wall thickness application.

The best is MINERAL WOOL. But the thickness of this application (approximately )will be three to four times that of CS.

But can withsatand up to 1000 digrees.

Microprous insulation , this is more efficiently than CS and Thicknes also 3 times lesser than CS at the same temprature requirements.

There is a relatively new product available now called Pyrogel XT that is manufactured in rolled sheets approximately 1/4" thick that can be applied in appropriate layers to fit your specifications. It's upper temperature limit is 1200 degrees, so it would easily meet your requirements. Of course, this product can be protectively jacketed to meet your needs as well. One particular advantage is that it is re-usable to a greater degree than calcium silicate, which often breaks or crumbles when disturbed for maintenance work or inadvertant contact with the insulation system.
