Use of the IC, or fabrication of the IC itself?

Creation of an integrated circuit foundry as a backyard project is not possible. The answer is you cannot.

Can you please elaborate?

An April Fools day DIY guide perhaps....

Step (1) - Using your morter and pestle, grind white beach sand into a fine powder and mircowave on high for 20 minutes. Congratulations you now have your silicon base, now get out your gold pen (very fine tip) and microscope as its time to lay down those tracks.

Start with VHDL (Very High Speed Intregrated Circuit Hardware Description Language for FPGA) or Verilog (Verification Logic for ASIC), then send to Synthesis software. Then to Place and Layout. Then to the foundry.

An analog chip is a whole different problem.

And yeah, backyard fab is not possible.

Hands-on: Get started in analog IC design and fab (a three part article)

This covers your question nicely.
