AF Size for M160 Bolt

06/17/2009 5:47 AM

Was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction here.

Looking for the AF size for a metric heavy hex nut to suit an M160 bolt.

I have the standard BS 4190:2001 but that only goes as high as M150.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Kev B

It certainly is.

Thankfully, it is the largest one I am working on!!

With a bolt that size, Kev would be spending days chasing his tail as he winds down myriad jacking screws

Hydraulic Nuts, another alternative, would be an ideal option for something like this. Here's a link if anybody is interested.

With a simple air power impact wrench , he will do it easy , and a lot less space .

No room space for the classic wrench lever.

As answer to your comment I want to stress that for such huge threads torquing is not a recommended procedure. It is much more convenient and presents much more advantage to use stretching since the tensioning allows a higher pre-load (due to lack of torque shear) and the sensitivity to friction dispersion disappears.

To give you an order of magnitude depending on the equivalent friction coefficient considered same for thread and nut/head contact area the torques and forces at the elasticity limit are:

class 8.8 µ= 0.1 T= 380 kNm F= 18.4 MN µ=0.2 T= 653 kNm F= 15.4 MN (1MN=1.000kN=1.000.000 N)

class 10.9 same µ-s T=324 F= 15.7 T=557 F=12.6 same units as above

class 8.8 same µ-s T=225 F= 11 T=387 F=8.8 same units as above

Using stretching (tensioning) the pre-loads are for 12.9 F=20.2/10.9 F=17.2 /8.8 12 MN.

It is easy to recognize the advantage. Values computed at elasticity limit. Can be adjusted according to accepted limit. Those values are INDEPENDENT of the friction and have the dispersion of the equipment which is limited to the seal friction or even less if tensioning is combined with an elongation measurement.

AF = 248 (rounded 250) H = 137 (rounded 140) in mm

Extrapolated as AF=1.6*d and H= (0.8...1)*d

There is a geometrical similitude for all dimensions proportional to nominal diameter "d"

Examples:

M 10 20 30 42 48

S=AF 16 30 46 65 75

S/d= 1.6 1.5 1.53 1.55 1.56 mean =1.548

H 8.4 18 25.6 34 42

H/d 0.84 0.9 0.85 0.81 0.875 mean = 0.855

Hope it will help.

I have heard a rumour that the dimension I am looking for is in standard ASME B18.2.4.1

Does anyone have access to this standard so they can check for me please?

Kind Regards

Kev Brown

I have access to it (and others),

and ASME B18.2.4.1M only covers up to M36X4

& B18.2.4.6M only covers up to M100X6

I have never dealt with sizes in the M160 range, so I will have a look to see if there are any references to other standards.

DIN 931-2 covers upto M160x6 bolts But I have to check up whether our library has the copy (doubtful)
