HVDC Transmission

hvdc transmission is efficent for long distance.how much is the feasible distance now? it was 900 ,8 years ago.then it came down .

also what type of devices be the best selection earlier it was scr and converters and inverters were phase controlled rectifiers.now is gto feasible? or any new systems can be adopted?
