Where's the Cheap Gas?

06/09/2005 2:30 PM

So where's the cheap gas in your city? It appears that Google Maps has many fun (and functional) uses; however, these websites are operating without Google's permission. Google hasn't tried to shut them down, but why should they. It's all great publicity for the company.

Google Hacks

If Google sold an open API and licensing for Google Maps so many companies would buy the rights it would make your head spin. This site is cool, as is Housingmaps.com. Google has always been very good about letting people play with their technology, as long as no one makes money off of it.

It's not stealing. It if Google didn't want this kind of add-ons being done then they wouldn't have made the interface so adapter friendly or allow applications to interface so nicely. I think it was done on purpose just to see what people would do with it before they reeled it back into it's proprietary corral.

Forbidden!

I just went to the site and received the following missive:

FORBIDDEN:
Site Owner, Please contact your support center for assistance.

Apparently someone upset the "gas" gods...

Gas Buddy

If you still want the information you can get it at Gas Buddy, you just don't get the fancy map feature from Google Maps. Housing Maps gave you an idea of what the 'gas maps' looked like when it was in working order.
