How about a good "old fashioned" visual inspection.

It really depends on the facilities you have.

You may do it through

1- Visual check of the cutting point (usually our operators do it for most of the cases)

2- Optical projectors (these were used in earlier cases for our precision machinings, but currently lying in cold storage)

3- Tool presetters.- for a few machines, and also off machine cutter adjustments.

4- On machine tool checking devices - For all our new machines(CNC), once the preset cutter is loaded. This facility with Renishaw touch/noncontact probes measures the wear and automatically provides tool compensation on the program.

5- measurement of the end result, and statistical analysis.

Nice job Sb.

I would only add "with a tool makers Microscope" to your otherwise complete listing.

I have personally used the supermacro feature of my digital camera with great results too, but that was more for determination of cratering/ abrasion/ heat checking characterization rather than "wear measurement."
