Television Reception Problems

06/24/2009 3:13 PM

First, I would like to thank all of you who responded to my original question and those that told me to hang on were right. On June 12 most of my propblems swere righted but I still can not reach ABC or CBS. These are chanels in the Chicago area. Plus I can no longer record programs because my old Toshiba does not have access to the new station numbers.

I went to Best Buy to purchase a new recorder that could but was told that the only new station that the new equipment could record was 5.1. I can't beleive that this is accurate but the salesman stated that is the case. I only have a attic antennae with a booster and I wonder if some of you more learned people out there could clarify the situation for me. I really like to record the late night programs and view them at my leisure and zip through the commercials.

I think the days of free air-wave analog television are about to come to a close.

I suggest cable/satellite with TiVo.

Or you can do as I do and watch all your favorite shows/movies Via your broadband internet connection. little to no commercials in the first place, watch what you want when you want. I have never not been able to find the show/movie I'd like to see, with some diligent searching of the almighty interwebs.

I haven't played with my very old video equip. since the digital switch so I don' know if this works or not. My Old TV wasn't even cable ready, it has the connections but not the ability to use it with cable without an external box. I no longer pay for TV. I just use the roof antenna but it works fine with the digital TV converter.

Wouldn't the video recorder work if hooked up to the output of the new digital TV de-scrambler box. Or if your using a more modern TV hook the recorder to the output of the TV. The digital signal will be fixed by the converter and thus be able to be recorded by the old VHS or other type of recorder.

Can you clarify your statement "but was told that the only new station that the new equipment could record was 5.1". I'm trying to figure out what Best Buy meant by that. There are USB and PCI Bus tuners available that are ATSC tuners (ATSC is the signal format for the new HDTV over-the-air). You should still be able to DVR the over-the-air stuff as long as you have a compatible tuner. I'm not really up on it, but I think the ATSC standard does have the ability to prevent DVR recording, if the broadcasting source want to prevent it, but I doubt the network stations would block DVR recording on their stations. The statement from Best Buy sounds like he was talking about the audio signal (5.1), that's why it doesn't make much sense to me. Can you share a bit more info?

Tom

Interesting news about the ATSC standard preventing recording. Can anyone confirm that?

Redfred,

I didn't mean to imply that ATSC cannot be copied/DVR'd, I was just stating that the capability is built into the standard. The broadcasters\content providers COULD prevent DVR or DVD recording by making use of the copy protection scheme that is supported in ATSC broadcasts.

I tried to find some more relevant info, but I need to get back to work :)

Hope that helps,

Tom

Thanks. I understood what you meant that a source in the data stream had the option to prevent recording. I will be reading the printed link at my leisure (Ha) later.

Again Thanks

Re: Television Reception Problems

I have COX cable with an HD set top box (STB). The "700" channels provide great HD on my 55 inch Mitsubishi, which does NOT have a built-in ATSC tuner. My other three TV's are hooked to the basic cable with no STB, so I only get the basic cable channels from 02 to 70 (weather), plus 98 & 97. I was disappointed with the quality of the pictures for NBC, CBS, etc. after the conversion to digital on these other TV's. Even though it is now digital, it is obviously not the HD quality that comes free off the air.

But one of my remote TV's has an ATSC tuner, so I did a re-scan to see what I might pick up. What I discovered was that channels 70, 71, 72, etc. were all in HD ! So, the ATSC receiver is decoding these HD channels with full resolution, even though there is no COX STB hooked up to it ! I wrote down the channel numbers (e.g. 72-4 was channel 12, for instance), and now can get full HD in that room.

For grins, I tried that on another TV with out an ATSC tuner, and it did NOT pick up these HD channels, indicating that COX is not doing the detection and re-transmission. The bottom line is that Ican now get HD from any COX cable outlet in my house if the TV has its own HD receiver at no extra charge (and no need for an antenna).
