How Many Cars Do the Big Three Build?

06/26/2009 8:47 AM

I have searched on line to find out how many cars and trucks GM, Ford and Chrysler build in one year but I can not find. Other question, how much is production down from last year or the year before? Are there numbers available? Thanks for the help in advance.

It's commercially-sensitive information, Guv, because no-one wants their competitors to know too much. The answer is easy, though. Buy some shares and go to the outfits' Annual General Meetings! If the data isn't in the Annual Reports, ask the bleedin' question at the AGM. <Cough, wheeze>

Automotive News, Wards and other Auto trade publications provide data on platform builds.

Here is a link that should help.

To put the numbers in perspective, Ford used to sell about 900,000 F-series trucks in a year. Thirty-some thousand a month is obviously a long way from that number, although May is not the best sales month.

The Prius is down 61 percent in May this year vs last. I assume that is largely because people had been waiting for the new model (which is now out) -- so it will be interesting to see what the June numbers show. But in any case, there are plenty of products from Detroit in the list of top sellers. That does not support the contention, often heard, that Detroit is failing to build the cars we want. Half of the most popular light vehicles are Detroit brands. The Ford Fusion is actually selling better this year than last, while the Corolla/Matrix is down by 55.4% (although still very popular).

You might want to define WHO you mean by the Big Three. Likely the Big Three aren't exactly who you had in mind!!
