Ga Ed,

'Bout to die it is, and lucky it's not a Ford, which will give no warning before it goes Kaput!

Dodge has their issues too, the later diesel with the VP high pressure pump has a ten dollar in the tank, when it goes the VP pump starves for both fuel but fuel also lubes it.

$10 in tank - $750 high pressure pump all gone

WHAT MOTOR DOES IT HAVE? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO IT TO FIND OUT THE PROBLEM? IS THE TANK COMPLETELY FULL, HALF, OR ALMOST EMPTY WHEN IT DOES THIS? OR DOES IT DO IT ALL THE TIME? IS YOUR CHECK ENGINE LITE ON? IF NOT, THE WILL RULE OUT INPUT/OUTPUT SENSORS. IF IT IS, TAKE IT TO AUTOZONE AND THEY WILL DO A SIMPLE DIAGNOSTIC ON IT. SENSORS, SYLENOIDS AND MOST ELECTRONIC STUFF ARE THE EASIEST TO FIX, PLUG 'N PLAY. OTHERWISE, CHECK FOR KINKED FUEL LINES AND THEN SIMPLIEST IS FUEL FILTER AND CLEAN THE INTAKE. YES, THE PUMP IS IN THE TANK AND IT IS A PAIN TO REMOVE, IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN, THAT WAS THE LAST YEAR OF THE METAL TANKS. CHANGE YOUR FILTER, FIRST, AND DUMP THE FUEL IN A PLASTIC WATER BOTTLE AND SEE IF YOU SEE ANY RUST SEDAMENTS COME FROM THE FUEL FILTER. IF NOTHING CHANGES AFTER YOU CHANGE THE FILTER, ITS TIME FOR A PRO....HE/SHE SHOULD BE CHECKING TPS-VOLTAGE SWEEP-DEEP DIAGNOSTIC WITH A SNAPON DIAG. TOOL FOR EACH FUEL INJECTOR AND IT GETS WORSE FROM THERE.....I BET MY CHECK ITS A KINKED LINE.

Just working on what he gave us I'll take your check, I'm betting the filter.

Excellent comprehensive and complete answer - GA to you.

Now turn off your caps lock.

And don't tell anyone but, prissy girls made better pilots, too.

ah, if it was the filter clogged, he'd have it ruff taking off, starting, etc....caps was from fabbing forms all day for knucklehead mechanics that can't see and don't seem to read english (they are supposed to be fluent, right!) VP pump? where is it located, not that i can look at mine until december, but, i don't remember looking at it when i changed a buddies fuel pump.

Sorry VP was shorthand for the diesel VP-44 fuel pump.

It was a whine about $10 in tank pumps ruining $750 injector pumps. Bad design.

But he would only have all those symptoms completely (nearly?) clogged, he may just be having flow problem.

And welcome to the forum (also a place people are fed to lions, so strange name choice).

Have you done your regular maintenance? Air filter, fuel filter? If these are good, you might want to consider a restrictive exhaust system. Create an exhaust leak by removing the Oxygen sensor, and see if the truck is better at 40. But you should read the trouble codes stored in the vehicle's memory before you buy anything. Good luck.

The 96-98 era Dodge inline 6 was notorious for head problems...

Great engine otherwise.
