Reqaltrd,

You did not tell us "Who" you are in this transaction.

Are you the, engineer, constructor, the supplier?

Also what kind of project is this?

Either way someone needs tro educate the "Customer" about pipe and fittings

you can supply butt weld instead of socket weld, butt weld usually used for high pressure and good strength .

Yes, you can supply butt weld elbows instead of socket weld, where the strength of of butt weld equals three times the strength of socket weld.

It is acceptable to substitute butt weld fittings for socket weld fittings as long as your client does not object. I have never ran across 4" socket weld fittings to tell the truth in my 30 years of pipe fighting. The largest socket weld fitting I have ever installed was a 2.5" size and it took at least twice as long to weld out than a butt weld fitting of the same size did. The cost of a 4" socket weld (if you could find one) would be many times more expensive than a butt weld fitting. I am sure that besides the lower strength high cost is one of the main reasons you don't see them.

i would look at where pipe is located at, if it 2 inch off wall with that elbow you can weld it if it a std butt elbow it is hard to weld . i weld this elbow out in steel mill on hyd. system 1/2 up all fittings was socket and xx, xxx, pipe not seamless why you useing seamless pipe cost about 2 times as std

Be careful what you substitute here if your customer is asking for something particular then I would just ask him if he really wants this? I see this as an odd request and I would try and explain why to him. I am not sure about where you live but where I am the customer always gets the last call as long as his request is not against the spec. or code or something dangerous. If the customer insists on having a 4" s/w fitting then I would suggest having a machine shop make one from stock. Above all on most jobs it is best not tick the (paying) customer off.
