Tie-ins to Existing Welded Piping Systems

07/05/2009 12:58 PM

i have a long run of existing ss pipe with no flanges, and need to cut in ss tee.where do i indicate field welds on isometric drawing.should this also be a field fit and weld as opposed to just a field weld.Is it more practical to cut pipe at existing fitting such as elbow.

it would be better and practically also if you consider fitting to pipe weld joint as a tie-in point.

Is a "clamp, gate valve and trepanning" operation out of consideration as an alternative?

If you are not in a hazardous operating environment/commodity, and can isolate your line, field cold cutting and welding is good to go...I work in a flammable hazardous environment, for our needs, hot-tapping is common...it can cost too much to evacuate a line, and can also disrupt the upstream and downstream manufacturing operations. But always....Safety First!

I appreciate your response.Obviously, fabrication of pipe spools is more cost effective if you have flanged connections in system.Again,I appreciate your input.
