Transmission Lines and Earthing

07/06/2009 7:27 AM

PROBLEM : There is less clearance between earth wire of 220KV transmission line & 400KV transmission Line bottom conductor. due to this in storm line is tripped.
QUESTIONS :
1) Whether diamond arrangement of 220KV line earth wire will solve the problem?
2) whether removal of earth wire of 200KV Line crossing span will solve the problem?
3) whether earth wire of complete 220KV line section can be removed & L.A. provided on each tower of 220KV Line.

Not sure of you question but if Transmission line conductors have too much sag they will swing sideways during the storm and make contact with the earth wire. Suggest you do the calculations to determine the length of side swing and determine if the earth wire conductor can make contact. May need to re-sag the TL conductors and earth wire.I would not remove the earth wire. Re-sag can cure the problem.

Details are in sufficient to comment. What is the tower is it single circuit or double?

Conductor Formation vertical or Horizontal.Tower type is it standard or Bridge type?Normally on 400 KV we use bridge towers with condtors in horizontal formation wit two earth wires running on top.clearence betwwen phase is 11 M and span is av.400M. only near river crosing we use Double circuit with conductor in vertical formation.220KV line and 400KV Xing ! Normally such crossing is not done.Is it at right angles?provision of LA will be of little use.Earth wire is basically to prevent direct strike on the conductors.Pl clarify above to see how we can tackle this.

Both 220KV & 400KV lines are double Ckt. with verticle conductor formation and the crossing is at right angle. Type of tower is Standard Barrel type.
