Diesel fuel polishing pump

07/07/2009 5:25 PM

Does anyone have plans for building a diesel fuel polishing pump to treat and recirculate diesel fuel through a 1000 gallon storage tank? Also need a parts list and source information.

What grit sandpaper do you use to polish a liquid?

Seriously though I don't know what fuel polishing is.

I hope its not that stuff where you stick a magnet on a fuel line in order to increase engine power and efficency!

Diesel fuel polishing is a process where biocide is introduced into the diesel fuel storage tank and the diesel fuel is recirculated through the fuel tank and filters at certain intervals to eliminate the dead microbes that normally grow in diesel fuel and are killed by the biocide.

Talk to a pump/filtration supplier, and give him much more information than you gave us and he will help you. After you have properly sized the system, it's simply a matter of plumbing.

I appreciate your response. There are commercial filtration units that cost several thousands of dollars however, the polishing system can be very simple. It only requires recirculating the diesel fuel through the storage tank and filters to eliminate the dead microbes after introducing a biocide into the system. This procedure is usually followed every six months to one year according to the climate where the storage tank is located. I was hoping that perhaps someone on this blog had made one before and had a drawing, parts list, and parts source. The parts that are required are a couple of filters, a pump and plumbing. If no one has this information on this blog I will build one myself and, after I have finished the unit, I will share this information with anyone who would like to contact me. OEM

Ah! I see. Active tank filtering as us simple farm folk call it.

I have seen a system like that before that was used on huge fuel tanks at a large trucking company. It was just a simple pump the pulled fuel off the lowest point in the tank and the ran it thought a set of filters for water and what not and then returned it back to a different point on the tank.

Basic plumbing 101. Add a timer system so the pump only runs for a hour or so every day and you should be good to go. I don't think continuous circulating is necessary but could be wrong though. As far as the pump is concerned a small unit should be all thats needed. At the place I saw this type of system it was very simple the only thing was I don't know who made the pumps themselves but they looked all most identical to standard cartridge type hot water circulator pumps. For all I know they could have been the same basic pumps but only designed and rated for fuel instead of water usage.

The volumes pumped are not that high and the system should not have any restriction other than the filters if they get plugged up.
