Power Factor Improvement

07/10/2009 10:15 AM

I want to connect a power factor corrective equipment (Capacitor Bank) with my 509 kva diesel generator to improve its 0.8 lagging p.f to 0.97. What will I have to do?

Calculate the required size for the capacitor bank and connect them to the generator according to the electric code in your area.

Formulas

A) Capacitors Connected in Parallel

B) Capacitors Connected in Series

C) Capacitive Reactance Xc

D) Capacitance C

E) Capacitive Kilovars

F) Power Factor

G) Kvars Required to Change Power Factor

where:

= Initial Power Factor Angle

= Final Power Factor Angle

H) Equations for Total Power

good for both 3 phase and
single phase calculations

I) Total Power

J) Equations For Reactive Power

K) Approximate Voltage Rise for Addition of Capacitors

where:

L) Released System Capacity for Power Factor Improvement

M) % Loss Reduction for Correcting Power Factor

N) Capacitor Current

O) Total Harmonic Distortion

P) Root Mean Square, RMS

Q) Displacement Power Factor

R) Total Power Factor, TPF

S) Resonant Frequency

T) I*T Product

U) Quality Factor, Q

V) Crest Factor, CF

W) Inrush Current and Frequency Calculation for Single Capacitor Bank Switching

X) Inrush Current and Frequency Calculation for Back-To-Back Capacitor Bank Switching

ok you can improve the pf from 0.8 to .97, it will increase your Dg efficiency.

but the same time you should consider followings

1. Your plant load factor

2. What type of load you are giving

3. whether the load is continuous or incentanious

4. DG set condition also conceder ( if your Dg having less efficiency that will effect when a power factor correction panel or bank failure)
